title = "Dopamine metabolism in the tuberculum olfactorium",
abstract = "The occurrence of the major dopamine metabolites, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA) in the tuberculum olfactorium of the rat was demonstrated by gas chromatography. The ratio of DOPAC to HVA in the tuberculum olfactorium was greater than the ratio of these metabolites in the striatum. The effect of pargyline and probenecid on dopamine metabolite levels was similar for both the tuberculum olfactorium and striatum.",

note = "Funding Information: The major ascending monoamine pathways in rat brain have been mapped out utilizing histochemical fluorescent techniques combined with specific lesions (Ungerstedt, 1971). Ungerstedt (1971) described in addition to the well known nigro-striatal pathway a mesolimbic dopaminergic system originating from cell bodies dorsal to the interpenduncular nucleus at A 10 and innervating the tuberculum olfactorium (T.O.) and nucleus accumbens. These dopamine (DA) rich areas have been the focus of considerable attention recently with respect to a 'dopaminergic theory of schizophrenia' (Matthysse, 1973). This theory is supported by the ability of antipsychotic drugs to accelerate DA turnover in the striatum presumably by receptor blockade (Carlsson and Lindqvist, 1963). Psychosis induced by large doses of the catecholamine-releasing drug amphetamine closely mimics paranoid schizophrenia and may be mediated by DA * Supported in part by grants from the NIMH No. MH 21638-03 and MH 25644, a research career development award No. IK04 GM 40793-05 to S.W. and a research scientist development award No. DA 70082 to S.D.G.",
