N1 - Funding Information: W. Clark Lambert, MD, PhD,a and Philip C. Hanawalt, PhDb Newark, New Jersey, and Stanford. California Fifty of the world's leading investigators in DNA repair convened for a week in the picturesque Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud in the Loire Valley of France to discuss the genetics and biochemistry of this rapidly evolving field in mammalian cells, its expanding role in current concepts of the pathogenesis of a growing number of human diseases, and its present and potential exploitation in their treatment. The principal organizers, Muriel W. Lambert (University of Medicine and Dentistry [UMD]-New Jersey Medical School, Newark) and Jacques Laval (Institut Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France), were assisted by an organizing committee consisting of W. Clark Lambert (UMD-New Jersey Medical School, Newark), Tomas Lindahl (Imperial Cancer Research Fund, Clare Hall Laboratories, South Mimms, u.K.), and Paul Lohman (State University of Leiden, The Netherlands). The meeting was dedicated to Paul Howard-Flanders (Yale University, New Haven, Conn.; 1919-1988), whose seminal contributions to the DNA repair field include the codiscovery of the excision repair pathway, the elucidation of the postreplication repair system in prokaryotes, and the isolation and characterization of many mutants deficient in DNA damage processing. Expenses and travel funds were provided by a grant from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
