Abstract

Diseases of the gallbladder and bile ducts are common causes of morbidity in the United States. The most common syndromes involve complications of gallstones, which can necessitate both outpatient or inpatient care. These syndromes can be treated effectively, often with surgical or endoscopic techniques. The prompt diagnosis and appropriate management can often lead to rapid resolution with minimal long-term complications. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in particular has become the mainstay of treatment for gallstones and is one of the most commonly performed operations.
