Abstract

The differential-display proteomic patterns of colon cancer in serum were studied by using surface-enhanced laser desorption ionization (ELDI)-TOF mass spectrometry. The molecular mass of the 8.9 kDa marker in the colon cancer patients and normals was determined to an accuracy of ∼0.1. Plasma samples were analyzed from 34 patients with confirmed colon cancer and 14 normal controls. Blood plasma from patients and controls were diluted with 10% acetonitrile in PBS containing 50 mM NaCl. The average differential expression of the intensities of the 8.9 kDa protein was ∼3-fold higher in colon cancer patients than in the controls.
