Abstract

We construct a model of a field theory in which the nucleon and the Roper resonance appear symmetrically, with the three couplings NNπ, NN*π and N*N*π. Starting from the lagrangian we establish the compositeness conditions for the system. The model is used to calculate the I=1/2, J=1/2+ πN amplitude and we show that the results obtained for the real phase shift are in resonable agreement with the phase-shift analyses. We conclude that the Roper resonance may be considered as composite. In this case, however, the pion-nucleon interaction Lagrangian contains an infinite number of coupling terms.
