Deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis in total joint replacement: American college of chest physicians versus american Academy of orthopaedic surgeons′ guidelines

The most effective approach to venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in total joint replacement remains controversial. Despite the high risk of postoperative venous thromboembolism, there also is a substantial risk of bleeding that may result from excessive anticoagulation, which can lead to a series of catastrophic events. This article compares two sets of guidelines for thromboembolism prophylaxis after total joint arthroplasty. The relative efficacy and safety of either set of guidelines are still subjects of debate in current clinical practice.
