Abstract

Crohn’s disease (CD) is characterized by chronic intestinal inflammation. The exact etiology remains unclear; however, research continues to advance at a rapid pace to try and uncover the mysteries of this heterogeneous inflammatory process. Two important discoveries have been made in the past decade: the role of genetic susceptibility in CD and the introduction of monoclonal antibodies targeted to tumor-necrosis factor alpha (TNFa). This chapter will highlight advances in the diagnosis and management of CD and how genetics is shaping the individualization of treatment approaches.
