abstract = "The objectives of this study were to test the hypotheses that a vertebral wedge deformity created by asymmetrical loading will correct after reversal of the load asymmetry and that vertebral growth will return to normal following load removal. An external fixator was applied to the tails of two groups of 12 rats each. The fixator applied an axial compression of 60\% body weight together with an imposed angulation of 30° and thus asymmetrically loaded the intervening vertebra and discs. After an initial asymmetric loading for four weeks the loading was reversed for four weeks in group I animals and removed in group II animals. Vertebral wedging was measured using radiographs and fluorochrome labeling. This study showed Uiat a wedge deformity can be corrected by reversing the load used to create it and that vertebral growth rates will return to normal after removal of the external loads, demonstrating that growdi is not permanenUy affected by applied loading.",
