Abstract

There are a multitude of treatments available for the prevention and treatment of scars and it is often difficult for both physicians and consumers to make informed choices about these products. In this chapter we will describe several of the most commonly used actives in topical scar treatments including onion extract, vitamin E, retinoids, imiquimod and silicone. Additionally, we will discuss several natural remedies that are increasing in popularity. The mechanisms by which these various agents work and the studies confirming their efficacy will be reviewed.
