Abstract
The cardiometabolic-based chronic disease (CMBCD) model is designed to provide a basis for early and sustainable, evidence-based therapeutic targeting to promote cardiometabolic health and prevent the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The primary drivers of CMBCD risk are genetics, environment, and behavior, which can lead to the development of the secondary or metabolic drivers of CMBCD—adiposity and dysglycemia. Specific mechanistic pathways of dysglycemia-based chronic disease (DBCD) include abnormal adiposity, insulin resistance, pancreatic β-cell dysfunction, association with other metabolic syndrome traits, and the development of CVD. Both DBCD and CMBCD models expose actionable targets to prevent the onset of CVD, particularly coronary heart disease, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation. This chapter provides the context for DBCD management—the mitigation of CMBCD development and progression.
