COMPUTERIZED ALERTING SYSTEM REGARDING SPECIAL-CONCERN PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS.

Abstract

A computerized special-concern patient alert system (SCPAS) aimed at identifying, in a timely and efficient way, patients seen at a comprehensive psychiatric facility who require special care (particularly those presenting themselves for care at the emergency department) is described. The grounds for this special concern may be the existence of allergies, a history of violence, a danger of homocide or suicide, or other significant medical problems. Since many of these patients repeatedly seek care, an efficient means of identifying them would be very helpful to the clinical staff. The system's development, its implementation, and some of the issues involved are discussed.
