Abstract
Colonoscopic examination of the colon in patients with rectal bleeding, either overt or occult, adds a new dimension to the diagnosis. In 30 to 50 per cent of patients, significant lesions causing bleeding were seen that were not discovered on barium enema X ray examination. Most lesions are found in the left colon. Patiens with overt bleeding are more likely to have a benign polyp as its cause; those with occult bleeding are more likely to have a carcinoma.
