Abstract

Sagittal movements are considered by means of a three-link eight-muscle mathematical biped model. Muscle synergies for the execution of skilled voluntary movements are developed through linear optimization. The optimization measure is sum of non-diagonal entries in the coactivation stiffness matrix. An algorithm for the computation of optimal muscle firing rates is presented. The algorithm naturally provides positive muscle forces, positive firing rates and positive reflex signals. Bowing and squatting movements are analyzed as examples.
