Abstract
Controlled clinical trials in acute lymphocytic leukemia in children under 20 have identified principles of chemotherapy which form the basis for new and better treatments. Sixteen patients are being followed free from leukemia without therapy for significant periods up to 5 yr. The probability of achieving this status is dependent upon the duration of intensive methotrexate treatment and upon staccato reinforcement therapy. Current programs suggest optimal early control with VCR and prednisone induction with intrathecal MTX followed by 6 MP and MTX maintenance with staccato reinformcements. DNR added during induction does not make a favorable contribution to this program.
