Abstract

Fifty cases of choroidal detachment associated with primary retinal detachment were studied. The sex and age distribution, ocular history, clinical data, and surgical management of these cases were tabulated. The chance of developing a choroidal detachment with a retinal detachment is increased in patients who have had previous ocular surgical trauma and is probably greater in the older age group. Hypotony is a constant finding in these cases, and a discussion of the possible pathophysiologic process of this entity is given. An attempt to decrease the choroidal detachment prior to retinal surgery should be made, and careful monitoring of cryo or diathermy applications should be performed during the operation.
