Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was once defined by irreversible airflow obstruction. It is now known to encompass a spectrum of conditions with potentially reversible degrees of airflow obstruction. This has spawned numerous investigations aimed at pharmacologically modifying acute and chronic illness.
