Abstract

In this chapter, we describe the ultrastructure of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, with some examples from Chlamydomonas eugametos and Chlamydomonas monoica. Our ultrastructural tour survey images obtained by classic thin-sectioning of fixed material and by two techniques that visualize frozen nonfixed cells: quick-freeze deep-etch electron microscopy and cryo-electron tomography. Particular attention is given to the structure of the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi, contractile vacuoles, acidocalcisomes, microbodies, cytoplasmic vacuoles, and mitochondria.
