Abstract

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is the third leading cause of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease worldwide. Catheter-directed thrombolytic (CDT) therapy is one of the newest treatment options for patients with intermediate-high risk PE and for selected patients with high risk PE. Infusion of low dose thrombolytic agent is given intra-vasculary directly into the embolus located within the pulmonary artery. Several studies in the past decade have supported the safety and efficacy of CDT. In this chapter we review the technique, indications, contraindications and potential complications of the procedure.
