Abstract
To the Editor: The Current Concepts article by Drs. Libow and Starer on the care of the nursing home patient (July 13 issue)1 presented a comprehensive, updated, and practical overview of the major problems facing physicians in the nursing home setting. Yet I would have liked the authors to have expanded their discussion of the current evolution of nursing home facilities and the emerging subspecialty of geriatric medicine. As a result of the changes in Medicare policies to require shortened hospital stays for patients with acute medical problems, nursing homes are forced to accept and treat “sicker” patients, who require.
