Abstract

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and peripheral vascular disease, is the leading cause of death and disability in most Western industrialized countries including the United States, dispersing across all ethnic, racial, and gender groups. Worldwide, it is estimated that death from CHD will increase 100% in men and 80% in women from 1990 to 2020, with majority of that increase coming from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.1 Similarly, disability-adjusted life-years lost will increase 107% in men and 74% in women worldwide.1
