Abstract
An attempt was made to electrically pace the heart with an electrode positioned in the lower esophagus. This was successful in 3 of 5 patients. In the successful cases no significant pain or skeletal muscle stimulation occurred. In the 2 unsuccessful cases pain or muscular stimulation, or both, precluded the utilization of adequate voltages. Some of the potentials of this technique as well as the possible drawbacks are discussed.
