Abstract
Capsule endoscopy is the test of choice when dealing with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding once colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) have proved negative. Yields of capsule endoscopy average 70% and are improved when the test is performed close to the bleeding episode. In addition, capsule endoscopy guides subsequent therapy with double balloon enteroscopy by using the percentage of the small bowel transit time to guide either per oral or transrectal double balloon approaches. A normal capsule study indicates a low risk of further bleeding.
