Abstract

A firm foundation in human physiology is important to anesthesiologists, perhaps more than any other group of physicians. While a review of human physiology in its entirety is beyond the scope of this book, we will review those aspects of human physiology germane to the practice of otolaryngologists and anesthesiologists caring for otolaryngologic patients. Our discussion focuses predominantly on pulmonary and cardiovascular physiology and the autonomic regulation of these systems. A thorough understanding of endocrine physiology is also important for both the otolaryngologist and anesthesiologist; this system is visited in Chap. 14.
