Abstract

A next best view (NBV) determination method was developed based on the combination of the shape from the silhouette method and the convex hull algorithm to ensure integrated and accurate results in 3-D laser scanning. A backlight board was used to illuminate the scene to acquire silhouettes in various directions to measure the model. The scanning path is determined by the convex hull of the model to provide automatic scanning while changing the sensor viewpoint. Experimental results show that the method can be used to scan an object with complex surfaces to provide accurate 3-D surface data.
