Abstract
Recent findings suggest that this cardiac hormone may be a major regulator of the physiologic responses to volume overload. Released by the atrium in response to mechanical stretch, ANF induces diuresis and natriuresis by eliciting hemodynamic changes in the kidney that are associated with striking increases in the GFR. Its therapeutic potential is intriguing.
