Abstract

The need for 72 hours of N-acetyleysteine treatment in all patients with acetaminophen overdose is unknown. Methodological issues preclude this question from being studied feasibly. Review of the existing literature suggests that shorter treatment courses are likely to be safe in a select group of patients. Risk factors for increased hepatoxicity from acetaminophen should be considered in the treatment decision.
