Abstract
Excessive fat depots, especially abdominal adiposity, exert deleterious cardiometabolic effects whereas physical exercise globally exerts a favourable influence. Therefore, the negative effects of excessive « fatness » might be counterbalanced by the positive effects of regular physical activity leading to high « fitness ». The present article analyzes the role of physical exercise and of a high cardiorespiratory fitness in the prevention of type 2 diabetes in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance and in the management of patients with type 2 diabetes.
