Abstract
A review of the use of mechanical ventilation in 219 selected patients with various causes of acute pulmonary insufficiency is presented. The choice of ventilator depends on the clinical condition of the patient and the individual characteristics of the ventilator. Careful monitoring techniques are imperative in order to avoid overtreatment and physiologic hazards. The ideal location for the use of mechanical ventilators and treatment of acute pulmonary insufficiency is in a deaignated area for pulmonary intensive care.
