Abstract
Antihistamines are a broad class of drugs, which can be further subdivided by their receptor specificity (H1 vs H2) and whether they cross the blood-brain barrier (first generation) or remain in the periphery (second generation). This chapter will focus on the first-generation H1antagonists commonly used in clinical practice for purposes of sedation, nauseal and vomiting prophylaxis, and roles in pain management.
