Abstract

Diagnosis of an anencephalic fetus has been confirmed by immunological detection of β-trace protein of cerebrospinal fluid in amniotic fluid. In seventy-five control amniotic-fluid samples, a precipitin reaction to β-trace protein could not be demonstrated. It is suggested that this method may serve as a reliable specific index of neural-tube defects.
