Abstract

On the basis of a literature review with 22 references cited, it is concluded that the general belief that spinal anesthesia is safer than general anesthesia in patients who had a myocardial infarction is without firm foundation. The complication rate of local anesthesia, where it can be used, is very low. Following myocardial infarction, at least 6 months should elapse, if possible before elective surgery is performed.
