Abstract

This paper presents a study on the stresses in a joint of three structural timber elements made with punched metal plates. The aim of the work was to determine the effect of significant variables, such as contact between pieces working in compression, thickness of the plate, load levels and the joint design. Parametric finite element models of the joint were developed. The analysis showed that there is a value of the gap between timber pieces over which the contact begins, and another value under which the percentage of contribution of the force transmission by contact keeps constant. These values are independent of the thickness of the plate or the joint design.
