Abstract
To the Editor: Concerning the article, “Excess of Ampicillin Rashes Associated with Allopurinol or Hyperuricemia” (N Engl J Med 286:505-507, 1972), one must question the implication of either allopurinol or hyperuricemia as enhancing ampicillin rashes from this article - the title is misleading and is in fact not supported by data in the article but by surmise only in the last paragraph. Diphenylhydantoin (Dilantin), for example, can frequently produce cutaneous eruptions; yet no one has claimed that lupus erythematosus predisposes a patient to diphenylhydantoin rashes, the reason being perhaps that the clinical and histologic features of cutaneous lupus erythematosus are.
