Abstract

Most older adults want to remain in their homes as long as humanly possible. In order to maintain their ability to age in place, older adults rely on caregivers to assist them in the activities for which they need assistance. Caregivers are usually classified into two realms: family caregivers and paid caregivers. Being a caregiver can be both a rewarding and a stressful burden. This chapter reviews key features of family and paid caregivers, provides resources for caregivers, and offers guidance on selecting and hiring paid caregivers.
