Abstract
Acute red eye is a common problem seen in primary care practice. Viral conjunctivitis, one of the most prevalent causes, often can be diagnosed and treated in this setting, although in some cases referral to an ophthalmologist is needed. This article discusses the presenting features of viral conjunctivitis, the key diagnostic criteria, differential diagnostic considerations, treatment regimens, and indications for referral.
