Abstract

Seventeen patients in deep coma for varying lengths of time following head injury were treated on several occasions with acupuncture stimulation. The points used, Kidney 1 and Governing Vessel 24 and 26, are described in ancient Chinese literature. Improvement occurred in all patients immediately. Within 3 months, two patients recovered completely and five patients were discharged with less than 25% neurologic deficit. Comparison was made with fifteen similarly injured patients from the previous year. The acupuncture group showed significantly greater improvement.
