Abstract

Abscesses of the hand associated with otopharyngeal infections are extremely rare in children. One case each of Hemophilus influenzae otitis media and beta hemolytic Streptococcus pharyngitis associated with infection of the thenar space and the extensor tenosynovium and dorsal subaponeurotic space, respectively, are reported. Surgical decompression is recommended if there is not marked improvement after a brief trial of intravenous antibiotics.
