Abstract

These preliminary results raise the possibility that other tricyclic-responsive disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic/agoraphobia, and anorexia nervosa may show alterations in noradrenergic activity like those present in patients with affective disorders, although differences may also exist between these disorders. All of these disorders may be characterized by a dysregulation of noradrenergic activity associated with decreased α2-adrenergic responsiveness. Tricyclic antidepressants might be useful in a variety of these disorders by enhancing the efficiency of the noradrenergic system.
