Abstract
INTRODUCTION - In the tenth year of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Hungary we intended to evaluate HIV/AIDS practice of Hungarian hospitals with the help of a cross sectional study. METHODS - We sent a simple questionnaire for the leaders of each Hungarian hospitals to collect their experience about the HIV/AIDS problem. Data were analyzed with the EPI-Info 5 program. RESULTS - For the 163 sent questionnaires there were 150 responses (92%). In 32.7% of the responding hospitals HIV/AIDS infected patients have already been treated. Protection gloves were provided in 96.7% of the responding hospitals and 80.7% of them had closed blood processing system. There were significantly more educational courses organized and given for nurses than for physicians about the HIV/AIDS questions and problems in hospitals. The institutional cost of the HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention was estimated very subjectively by the responders. The estimated cost of HIV/AIDS ranged between 83 733.5 and 390.6 HUF (bed/year). CONCLUSION - According to the results of this survey, the HIV/AIDS problems is existing in the Hungarian hospitals in the form of the disease itself as well as in the methods of prevention.
