Abstract

Tuberculous laryngitis occurs in less than 1% of all tuberculosis cases. Patients usually present with dysphonia, but the insidious nature of the disease and the broad differential diagnoses often lead to missed or delayed diagnosis. In the United States, it is rare and regrettably requires several patient visits before the correct diagnosis is made.We report a case of primary tuberculous laryngitis from our hospital, whichwas successfully diagnosed and treated, but after a delay of more than 2 months. We emphasize that in patients presenting with prolonged dysphonia physiciansmustmaintain a high index of suspicion, obtain a thorough epidemiologic history, and liaisewith pathologists in order to correctly diagnose this disease.
