Abstract
The intestinal mucosa is the medium of communication between the internal body environment and outside world, and is the first line of host defense. Therefore, the integrity of intestinal mucosal barrier is essential for maintaining intestinal homeostasis and even host health. Quercetin is a natural flavonoids compound, which has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer and anti-bacterial functions. Researches showed that quercetin may maintain intestinal homeostasis and body health by regulating the composition of intestinal microbes, the thickness of mucus layer, the expression of tight junction proteins in intestinal epithelial cells, the production of bile and antimicrobial peptides, and the secretion of cytokine. The present study mainly reviewed the mechanism of quercetin regulating the intestinal mucosal barrier function in animals, this will provide a theoretical basis for developing new feed additives and their application in livestock and poultry production.
