Abstract
This experiment was designed to investigate the effects of dietary mulberry leaf extract (MLE) on growth performance, nutrient apparent digestibility, digestive enzyme activity, antioxidant ability and immune function of weaned piglets. Forty-eight DurocxLandracexYorkshire castrated weaned piglets with average body weight of (8.287±0.141) kg were selected. Piglets were randomly allotted into 2 groups as the control group (fed a basal diet) and the MLE group (fed the basal diet+1 000 g/t MLE) according to body weight, each group consisted of 6 replicates and 4 pigs per replicate. The experiment lasted for 28 days. The results showed as follows: 1) there were no significant differences in average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed/gain (F/G) of weaned piglets between the two groups (P>0.05), but compared with the control group, the average daily gain (ADG) in the MLE group had an increasing trend (0.05≤<0.10), and the diarrhea rate was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). 2) Compared with the control group, the apparent digestibility of ether extract in the MLE group was significantly increased (P<0.05), and the apparent digestibility of dry matter tended to be increased (0.05 ≤P<0.10). 3) Compared with the control group, the lipase activity in jejunum and ileum of weaned piglets in the MLE group was significantly increased (P<0.05). 4) Compared with the control group, dietary MLE significantly increased the glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in plasma as well as the total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity in liver of weaned piglets (P<0.05). 5) Compared with the control group, the plasma tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) content of weaned piglets in the MLE group was significantly reduced (P<0.05), and the contents of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) in plasma were significantly increased (P<0.05). In conclusion, dietary 1 000 g/t MLE can reduce the diarrhea rate, improve intestinal lipase activity and apparent digestibility of ether extract, and improve antioxidant ability and immune function of weaned piglets.
