Abstract
This experiment aimed to investigate the effects of citrus extract on the number of microbes and me⁃ tabolites in the cecal content of piglets. One hundred and forty⁃four 28⁃day⁃old Duroc×Landrace×Large White pigs with body weight of (8.39±1.06) kg were randomly assigned to 3 groups with 6 replicates per group and 8 pigs per pen (4 boars, 4 females). Piglets in the control group were fed a basal diet, piglets in the antibiotic group were fed the basal diet supplemented with 75 g / t chlortetracycline, and piglets in the citrus extract group were fed the basal diet supplemented with 300 mL / t citrus extract. The experiment lasted for 28 d. The results showed as follows: 1) compared with control group, dietary citrus extract significantly increased the number of lactic acid bacteria in cecal content of piglets (P<0.05), while antibiotic significantly decreased the number of lactic acid bacteria (P<0.05). Compared with control group, dietary citrus extract and antibiotic significantly decreased the number of Escherichia coli in cecal content of piglets (P<0.05), and the number of Escherichia coli in citrus extract group was significantly lower than that in antibiotic group (P<0.05). 2) Compared with control and antibiotic groups, dietary citrus extract significantly increased the contents of taurine, threonine, serine, valine, leucine and lysine in cecal content of piglets (P<0.05). Compared with control group, dietary citrus extract significantly decreased the contents of aspartic acid, isoleucine, cystathionine, hydroxylysine, or⁃ nithine, proline and total amino acids in cecal content of piglets (P<0.05) and tended to decrease the contents of glutamate and alanine (0.05≤P<0.10), and dietary antibiotic significantly decreased the content of orni⁃ thine and proline (P<0.05). 3) Compared with control group, dietary citrus extract significantly decreased the contents of phenol and skatole (P<0.05). Compared with control and antibiotic groups, dietary citrus extract significantly decreased the content of putrescine (P<0.05) and tended to decrease the contents of tyramine and spermine in cecal content of piglets (0.05≤P<0.10). Compared with control group, dietary citrus extract and antibiotic significantly decreased the contents of methylamine in cecal content of piglets (P<0.05). In conclu⁃ sion, citrus extract increases the number of lactic acid bacteria in cecal content of piglets, and decreases the contents of metabolites and the number of Escherichia coli.
