Calman, MD is chair of Mount Sinai’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, which was launched in 2012 in collaboration with the Institute for Family Health. Dr. Calman is the president, Chief Executive Officer, and a cofounder of the Institute for Family Health, one of the largest networks of community health centers in New York State. He is a board-certified family physician who has practiced in the Bronx and Manhattan for more than 30 years. Dr. Calman leads a variety of cutting-edge programs to provide high quality care in medically underserved communities. He is an active advocate for eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health care and health outcomes. Since1999, he has led a multiyear grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to work towards eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes in the Bronx. He conducts research in the health services and health policy arenas related to disparities. Dr. Calman has been recognized for his work in advancing the use of electronic health records to improve care and address health disparities with awards such as The Physician’s Information Technology Leadership Award presented annually by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). In April 2009, Dr. Calman was appointed by the Obama Administration to serve on the national Health Information Technology Policy Committee, which makes recommendations on the development of a nationwide health information technology infrastructure. He has received a variety of national awards for his leadership and advocacy, including: the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Community Health Leadership Award; the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Public Health Award; the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Primary Care Achievement Award and the National Physician Advocacy Merit Award given by the Institute on Medicine as a Profession (IMAP) and its partner, the Center on Medicine as a Profession (CMAP) at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Most recently, he was awarded a Kanter Prize from the Health Legacy Partnership and the Felix A. Fishman Award for Extraordinary Advocacy from New York Lawyers for the Public Interest.
