Assistant Professor | Psychiatry
Dr. Mina Rizk is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a physician-scientist specializing in the neurobiology of mood disorders and suicide. His research integrates neuroimaging, immune-proteomic profiling, and clinical trials to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying suicidal behavior and treatment-resistant depression, with the goal of developing novel therapeutics for these conditions.
Dr. Rizk completed medical school and residency training in neurology and psychiatry in Egypt. He later joined Columbia University as a visiting scholar and subsequently as a Paul Janssen Postdoctoral Fellow, where he contributed to translational neuroscience studies on depression and suicidal behavior and received a NARSAD Young Investigator Grant to study the potential anti-suicidal effects of buprenorphine. He then completed a psychiatry residency on the Physician-Scientist Track at Mount Sinai, where he worked on projects examining the immune mechanisms underlying depression and suicide risk.
Dr. Rizk’s current work focuses on blood-brain barrier imaging combined with high-dimensional immune proteomics to identify biomarkers of suicide risk. He has also received funding from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to investigate the immune mechanisms underlying the anti-suicidal effects of ketamine and electroconvulsive therapy. In addition, he serves as co-investigator on several clinical trials exploring novel therapeutics for depression.
Dr. Rizk is a licensed psychiatrist in New York State. Clinically, he provides care to individuals with mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders, including those with treatment-resistant conditions, integrating evidence-based pharmacologic and interventional treatments.
