Biography
Emma K. T. Benn, MPH, DrPH is an Associate Professor in the Center for Biostatistics and Department of Population Health Science and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She received her BA in Chemistry (Spanish Minor) in 2004 from Swarthmore College. She subsequently received her MPH in Sociomedical Sciences in 2007 and DrPH in Biostatistics in 2012 from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Benn is one of the co-founders of the NIH-funded Biostatistics Enrichment Summer Training (BEST) Diversity Program in the Department of Biostatistics at Mailman. She has contributed her biostatistical expertise to a variety of research areas including: epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, COPD, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, HPV, skin bleaching in African and Afro-Caribbean populations, stroke, and cognitive disability. More recently, Dr. Benn has been focused on causal inference in disparities research and applying econometrics-related methods to account for selectivity bias in clinical and translational research.
Dr. Benn is the Director of Academic Programs for the Center for Biostatistics. Some of her educational leadership roles include: co-Principal Investigator of the NIH/NIGMS-funded http://www.asibs-statistics.com/ Applied Statistics in Biological Systems (ASIBS) Short Course to increase the statistical competency of junior faculty and fellows and reduce the racial/ethnic gap in promotion of clinical faculty from academic medical centers nationwide, co-Director of the http://icahn.mssm.edu/education/graduate/masters-programs/biostatistics-ms Master of Science in Biostatisticsprogram at ISMMS, co-Investigator of the NCATS-funded TL1 Training Program to strengthen and diversify the clinical investigator pipeline, and Director of the MPH in Biostatistics Track at ISMMS. She is also co-Director of the https://icahn.mssm.edu/departments-and-institutes/population-health-science-policy/center-for-biostatistics/education/biostatistics-summer-program-for-clinical-research ISMMS Biostatistics Summer Program for Clinical Research. Dr. Benn is very committed to increasing diversity in the field of biostatistics and currently serves on the http://icahn.mssm.edu/about-us/diversity/diversity-in-biomedical-research-council Diversity in Biomedical Research Council at ISMMS co-chairs the Eastern North American Region (ENAR) of the International Biometric Society Fostering Diversity in Biostatistics Workshop, and has served as a Mentor for the Joint Statistical Meetings Diversity Mentoring Program sponsored by the https://www.amstat.org/committees/commdetails.cfm?txtComm=CCNDVR01 Committee on Minorities in Statistics. Courses she has taught at ISMMS include Introduction to Advanced Biostatistics and Analysis of Categorical Data. Dr. Benn is a 2013-2015 https://www.lrp.nih.gov/program/applicants/extramural/health-disparities-research NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Program for Health Disparities Research recipient.
